As many of you know, my wife and I run a business called Metallimonsters, we sell a wide range of alternative baby clothing. We’ve had stalls at a few markets and fairs but this weekend we’ve decided to try our luck at Manchester Tattoo Convention. We thought it was about time to invest in some form of card reader. Or in other words, I got to go “toy shopping”!
After some research we decided to go for an iZettle Chip and Pin machine. The great thing about this device is that it tethers via Bluetooth to your iPhone, iPad or Android device. It also deposits money directly into your bank account. This means that you don’t have to pay for the inherent extras associated with conventional readers such as device rental and merchant account charges.
The only down sides are that you do not get the extra connectivity associated with modern card readers, because you are restricted to a single mobile network. It also takes slightly longer to deposit your funds into your bank account. However if you take the price of the device and transaction fees into account (a one off payment of £100 and between 2.75% and 1.5% of transactions) it really is an appealing investment.
It’s also possible to incorporate a till draw and receipt printer into your system to have a full POS solution. Personally I think this is a great product and service and makes card transactions very accessible to small business’ and traders who might otherwise have lost out on sales.
My one issue so far is their lack of phone support. If you have any problems you need to email their support team or place a message on their Facebook page. However, they assured me that they are looking to add phone support in the near future.
I have tested the device out myself and had no issues. Hope it all goes smoothly this weekend!
